Getting a diagnosis of cancer can be a very scary time. I have had clients tell me they feel powerless as lots of tests are performed and then treatments undergone. While it’s wonderful to have such life saving advances in medicine, it can be an overwhelming time. Because of this, it is a perfect time to introduce acupuncture, herbal medicine and or Reiki into one’s life. Acupuncture has been proven to help alleviate many side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, including nausea, pain and anxiety. The National Institute of Health has officially endorsed it for treatment of symptoms relating to cancer and cancer treatment and many insurance companies now cover acupuncture for treatment of those problems. Acupuncture has also been shown to increase white and red blood cell production in a healthy way so that while a person is undergoing treatments that are often very hard on the immune system, acupuncture can be helping to support that system, to keep the body in balance and to offer much needed deep relaxation. For thousands of years acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have been used to help keep people’s bodies in balance and working at their best – from digestion to immunity, sleep to pain relief and much more. Certainly when one is healing from cancer it is an ideal time to use integrative medicine to get your body the most healthy and relaxed it can be so that it’s natural powers of healing and renewal are working their best. I am also a certified Reiki practitioner and offer this gentle, soothing form of energy work to any client who would like it. Reiki is a centuries old form of energy balancing that involves relaxing, gentle touch at various points on the body and has been shown to significantly decrease pain and anxiety. And it feels wonderful!
My practice offers a focus on cancer care, with treatments tailored to fit each individual’s needs. I have completed specialized training in cancer care with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including level 2 of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Course on Acupuncture for Cancer Care. I have also studied Chinese herbs, nutrition and lifestyle suggestions to help you get your body the most healthy and balanced it can be. I also encourage clients to add some form of relaxation technique into their lives and offer resources on meditation, guided imagery or simple relaxing breathing techniques. In addition to my 4 years formal training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the internship I completed at at a top hospital in Beijing, China in 2000, I have been in practice for 15 years and have worked during that time with many cancer survivors. I also worked with cancer patients at York Hospital in Maine where I started the acupuncture program in 2001. I worked with clients from those looking to prevent health problems by staying at their healthiest, to those just diagnosed, to survivors healthy and many years post treatment.
I offer professional, deeply relaxing and rejuvenating treatments offered gently and with compassion. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, or is a survivor looking to stay strong, please feel free to email or call me if you’d like to make an appointment or if you would like more information. I’m happy to answer any questions as best I can via email or phone.
